What Word to PDF does
Word to PDF fixes a text document in place so it looks the same for everyone. A CV, thesis chapter or official petition can shift when opened in another word processor or on a phone with different fonts; as a PDF, line and page breaks, headers, footers, tables and pictures stay put. The tool reads .docx, .doc, .docm, templates (.dot, .dotx, .dotm), RTF and .odt files up to 15 MB.
Conversion runs on vupdf's own servers with a LibreOffice-based engine, and the menu is short: a normal PDF or one of three PDF/A levels, plus an optional file name. Headings become bookmarks for quick navigation. Macros are never run, and pictures that are only linked to an outside address are not fetched, so embed such pictures in the document itself.
How to use Word to PDF
- Click the upload area or drag your Word file onto it.
- Under “Output type”, leave “Standard PDF” selected, or choose PDF/A-1b, PDF/A-2b or PDF/A-3b if the file must meet an archiving requirement.
- If you want a different name, type it in the file name box; left empty, the PDF keeps the name of your document.
- Start the conversion and wait a few seconds while the document is laid out page by page.
- Check the preview of the result and download the PDF.
Features and options
- Broad Word format support
- Besides everyday .docx files, you can upload legacy .doc documents from older Office versions, templates, macro-enabled files, RTF exports and .odt files from LibreOffice or other OpenDocument editors.
- Bookmarks from headings
- Text formatted with Word's heading styles turns into a clickable outline in the PDF. In a long report or a thesis this saves readers a lot of scrolling, so it pays to use real heading styles rather than bold text.
- PDF/A straight from Word
- If a university, court, tax office or archive asks for PDF/A, you can produce it here in one step instead of converting twice. PDF/A-1b is the strictest and most widely accepted, PDF/A-2b allows transparency and layers, and PDF/A-3b also permits attached files.
- Your own file name
- Type a clear name such as Surname_CV before converting, and the download is already named the way an application form expects it. Turkish and other non-English characters in names are kept.
- Safe handling of untrusted files
- Macros are switched off for every conversion, and external links are removed from the file before it is opened. A document you received from a stranger therefore cannot run code or quietly load content from the internet during conversion.
When it helps
- You are applying for a job and want your CV to keep its layout no matter which device the recruiter uses.
- Your thesis office requires the final copy as PDF/A, and you wrote it in Word.
- An old .doc file from years ago has to be shared with someone who has no Office installed.
Tips and limits
- Fonts that are not available on the server are replaced by similar ones, which can change line breaks. If the exact look matters, stick to widely used fonts and check the preview.
- Password-protected Word files cannot be converted. Open the document in Word, remove the password, save it and upload it again.
- Very complex layouts such as overlapping text boxes or unusual wrapping can come out slightly different from what Word shows, so compare the first pages before sending the PDF.
Frequently asked questions
- Will comments and tracked changes appear in the PDF?
- Comments are left out of the PDF. If the document still contains tracked changes, accept or reject them in Word before converting, so the PDF shows exactly the text you intend.
- Which PDF/A level should I pick?
- Use the level your institution names. If none is named, PDF/A-2b is a good modern choice; choose PDF/A-1b only when an older system demands it, and PDF/A-3b when you plan to attach other files to the PDF later.
- Why are the headings not clickable in my PDF?
- Bookmarks are built from heading styles. If your titles are just enlarged or bold text, apply Heading 1, Heading 2 and so on in Word and convert again.
- Can I convert several Word files at once?
- The tool converts one document per run. If you need a single PDF from several documents, convert them one by one and combine the results with Merge PDF.
- Is it safe to upload a document that contains macros?
- Yes, as far as conversion goes: macros are disabled and never executed on our side. The file is processed only to create the PDF and is deleted right after you receive the result.
