What Crop PDF does
Crop PDF trims the visible area of PDF pages. It removes wide white borders around scanned documents, cuts away printer marks and empty margins, and isolates one part of a page, such as a map, a chart or a signature block, so it can be shown or printed on its own.
You draw the crop box directly on a page preview, or type exact margins in centimeters if you need precision. The same box can apply to every page, or each page can get its own, which is handy when scans are not aligned consistently. A square ratio helps with profile pictures and stickers, and an oval shape turns the crop into an ellipse or a perfect circle. Cropping is done on the PDF itself rather than on a screenshot, so text remains sharp vector text and images keep their original resolution.
How to use Crop PDF
- Upload your PDF; the first page opens in a preview with a crop box on it.
- Choose “Same on all pages” or “Different per page” under Pages.
- Drag the box’s edges and corners, draw a new box by dragging on the page, or type margins in centimeters.
- Optionally set a Square or page ratio, switch the shape to Oval, or type the margins in centimeters.
- Download the cropped PDF and check that nothing important was cut.
Features and options
- Same box or one per page
- In “Same on all pages” mode the box you draw applies to the whole document. In “Different per page” mode each page has its own box, untouched pages stay as they are, and “Copy this box to all pages” gives you a starting point.
- Precise margins in centimeters
- Left, Right, Top and Bottom fields show and accept the crop in centimeters. Use them when a print shop asks you to remove an exact bleed or when two documents must be trimmed identically.
- The page really gets smaller
- Not only the visible area is narrowed: the page size itself becomes the cropped area, so printers and converters that ignore the crop box also see the cropped page.
- Oval and circle crops
- With the Oval shape only the area inside the ellipse stays visible, and the corners become blank. Combined with the square ratio you get an exact circle, as a vector clip that keeps the original quality.
When it helps
- A student removes the thick grey borders a phone scanner app left around lecture notes, so the pages read better on a tablet.
- An engineer crops a single detail drawing out of a large plan sheet to attach it to an email.
- A club secretary makes a circular crop of a member photo that was placed on a PDF page.
Tips and limits
- The upload limit for cropping is 50 MB per PDF.
- Cropping hides the area outside the box but does not delete it from the file; someone could restore it with the right software. To remove sensitive content for good, use Redact PDF.
- Because the hidden content stays in the file, cropping does not make the PDF smaller. Use Compress PDF if size is the goal.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I crop each page differently?
- Yes. Switch to “Different per page”, move between pages with the arrows, and set a box for each page you want to change. Pages you don’t touch are left as they are.
- Is the cropped-off part really gone?
- No, it is only hidden. If the trimmed area contains information others must not see, run the file through Redact PDF, which permanently removes the content.
- How do I make a round crop?
- Choose the Oval shape and set the ratio to Square. The result is a perfect circle with blank corners, still as sharp as the original PDF.
- Does cropping work on pages that are rotated?
- Yes. The box is measured on the page as you see it in the preview, and the tool maps it correctly onto pages that are stored with a rotation.
- Can I crop a password-protected PDF?
- Yes. If the file has an open password, the preview appears once you type it; files that only restrict editing are cropped without one. The cropped copy comes without a password, so use Encrypt PDF if you want to lock it again.
- Does vupdf keep the PDF I crop?
- No. The file is processed on vupdf’s own servers only to apply the crop and is deleted right after the cropped copy is delivered to you.
