What PDF to Word does
PDF to Word turns a PDF into a DOCX file that opens in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer or Google Docs. It is for the everyday situation where a contract, a report or a CV reaches you only as a PDF and you need to change a few lines, update a date or reuse a paragraph without retyping the whole document.
Rather than pouring all the text into one long block, vupdf rebuilds every page so it still looks like the original. The drawn parts of a page, such as boxes, table rules, shaded areas and pictures, are kept as a background, and each piece of text becomes real, editable text placed where it sat in the PDF, with its size and style taken from the source. Pages whose text cannot be separated cleanly, for example sideways labels, keep a picture of the page instead of coming out scrambled.
How to use PDF to Word
- Open PDF to Word and drop your PDF onto the upload area, or click to choose it (up to 15 MB).
- If the PDF is password-protected, type its password into the field that appears and continue.
- Optionally enter a file name for the Word document; if you leave it empty, the PDF's own name is used.
- Click the PDF to Word button and wait a moment while the pages are rebuilt on the server.
- Download the DOCX file from the result screen and open it in your word processor to make your edits.
Features and options
- Looks like the PDF, edits like a document
- Each page keeps its graphics behind the text, so letterheads, frames and table lines stay where they were. The words themselves are live text, so you can correct a typo or replace a name directly in Word.
- Text positioned as in the original
- Text is placed in frames at the same spot it occupied on the PDF page. This works best for forms, invoices and one-page layouts where the position of every line matters.
- Rotated pages handled
- Page rotation is applied before the text is read, so a page that was turned in the PDF does not come out with sideways text in Word.
- Protected files supported
- If a PDF needs a password to open, the tool asks for it. The password is used only to open the file for this conversion.
- Your own file name
- You can name the DOCX before converting, which saves a rename step when you are handling several versions of the same document.
When it helps
- A landlord sends a lease as a PDF and you need to fill in your details and suggest a few changes before signing.
- You lost the original Word file of your CV and only have the PDF you once exported; converting it lets you update your latest job.
- A colleague shares meeting minutes as a PDF and you want to copy two sections into your own report with the formatting intact.
Tips and limits
- The size limit is 15 MB per file. For a larger PDF, cut out the pages you need with Split PDF first, or shrink it with Compress PDF.
- Scanned pages have no text layer, so they stay pictures in Word. If the whole file is a scan, run it through the OCR tool first and convert the searchable PDF afterwards; expect some tidying.
- Because text sits in positioned frames, adding long new paragraphs can overlap the layout. For heavy rewriting, copy the text into a fresh document.
- Fonts that are not installed on your computer are replaced by similar ones in Word, so spacing may shift slightly.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does my converted document use text boxes instead of normal paragraphs?
- The tool places text where it sat on the PDF page so the document looks the same as the original. That is ideal for small edits; if you want free-flowing text, copy it into a new document.
- Will tables come out as Word tables?
- The lines and shading of a table are kept in the page background and the cell text is editable on top of it. It looks like the original table, but you edit the text rather than adding rows.
- The tool says no extractable text was found. What now?
- That means the PDF is a scan or was made from images. Use the OCR tool to add a text layer first, then convert the result.
- Can I convert only some pages?
- The tool converts the whole file. To convert part of it, extract those pages with Split PDF and convert the smaller file.
- Is my document kept after conversion?
- No. The PDF is processed on vupdf's own servers only for this conversion and deleted once the Word file has been delivered.
