What Encrypt PDF does

Encrypt PDF puts a password on a document so that only people who know it can open it. That matters for files that travel by email or sit in shared folders: tax returns, medical reports, contracts, salary lists. vupdf encrypts the whole file with AES-256, so the content itself is scrambled, not just hidden behind a prompt.

The tool also helps you pick a password that holds up. A strength meter rates what you type and suggests concrete improvements, and one click generates a long random password you can copy. For more control, the optional permissions section decides what someone may do after opening the file, such as printing or copying, and lets you set a separate owner password for changing those rules later.

How to use Encrypt PDF

  1. Upload the PDF you want to protect.
  2. Type a password and repeat it, or click Generate strong password and copy it.
  3. Optionally open Permissions and owner password to limit printing, copying, editing or commenting.
  4. Click Protect PDF and wait while the file is encrypted.
  5. Download the protected file and save the password somewhere safe before leaving.

Features and options

AES-256 encryption
The document is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest method in the PDF standard. Without the password, no page can be displayed.
Password strength check
A meter rates your password from very weak to very strong and suggests fixes such as more length, mixed case, digits or symbols. It also warns about leading or trailing spaces and emoji.
Strong password generator
One click creates a random 16-character password, and Copy puts it on your clipboard.
Permissions
Choose what is allowed after opening: printing (none, low or high quality), copying text and images, adding and editing pages, and commenting and filling forms.
Optional owner password
A separate owner password lets you change permissions later. Leave it empty and the restrictions are locked for good.

When it helps

  • An accountant emails tax documents to a client and gives the password by phone.
  • A clinic shares a lab report that should stay unreadable if the email is forwarded by mistake.
  • A company sends partners a confidential price list they can read but not print or copy.
  • A writer shares a manuscript with copying blocked but comments allowed.

Tips and limits

  • If you forget the password, the file cannot be opened again, and vupdf keeps no copy of it. A password manager helps.
  • Send the password through a different channel than the file.
  • Permissions rely on the reader respecting them; they do not replace the opening password.
  • A PDF that already has a password must be unlocked with Remove Password first. Files up to 50 MB are accepted, and passwords need at least 4 characters, though 12 or more is far safer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the password and the owner password?
The password opens the file; the owner password is needed only to change permissions. The two must differ.
What if I set permissions but leave the owner password empty?
The file opens with your password, but the chosen restrictions are fixed permanently and nobody can lift them in a standard way.
If I don’t touch the permissions, what can people do after opening the file?
With the basic lock, the one password both opens the file and gives full rights to read, print and work with it.
Can I use emoji or Turkish letters in my password?
Letters such as ş, ğ or ı work fine. Emoji may stop the file from opening in some Linux readers, so the tool warns you.
Why does the tool say my PDF is already protected?
It already has a password. Remove it with Remove Password, then encrypt the unlocked copy with the new one.
Does vupdf keep my password?
No. It is used only to encrypt the file, which is deleted after you receive it. The result page can show the password once more so you can save it.
