What Rotate PDF does
Rotate PDF turns pages that show up sideways or upside down, permanently, so they display correctly for everyone who opens the file. Typical culprits are scans fed into the scanner the wrong way, phone photos converted to PDF, and documents that mix portrait text pages with landscape tables.
The workspace shows every page as a thumbnail with its own arrows, so a single crooked page can be fixed without touching the rest. For bigger jobs you can select odd or even pages, all portrait or all landscape pages, and turn them together, or straighten a whole document with “Make all portrait”. While you are in there, you can also remove unwanted pages and give pages a title that becomes a bookmark in the output. An optional setting keeps the original paper size, scaling the turned content to fit instead of making the sheet landscape.
How to use Rotate PDF
- Upload your PDF; each page appears as a thumbnail with left and right arrows underneath.
- Fix single pages with their own arrows, or select pages (Shift-click for a range) and use Left, Right or Turn 180° above the grid.
- Use the Select shortcuts for odd, even, portrait or landscape pages, or press Make all portrait / Make all landscape.
- Remove any page you don’t need and, if you like, click a page name to give it a bookmark title.
- Switch on “Keep page size” if the sheets must stay the same shape, then click Rotate PDF and download the result.
Features and options
- Smart selection
- Odd and Even select alternating pages, which is exactly what a duplex scan with every back side upside down needs. Portrait and Landscape select pages by their current shape.
- Make all portrait or landscape
- These buttons give a quarter turn only to the pages that currently show the other way, so a mixed document ends up uniform in one click without disturbing the pages that were already right.
- Keep page size
- Normally a quarter turn changes a portrait sheet into a landscape one. With this option the turned content is scaled down and centered on a page of the original shape, which matters when the file has to print on the same paper as the rest of a binder.
- Remove pages and add bookmark titles
- Pages you remove are truly dropped from the file, including links and form fields that pointed at them. Page titles you type are added as bookmarks after the document’s existing ones.
When it helps
- A clerk scanned a two-sided contract and every even page came out upside down; selecting Even and pressing Turn 180° fixes all of them at once.
- A financial report has wide spreadsheet pages printed sideways between text pages, and only those pages need a quarter turn so they read naturally on screen.
- A landscape drawing needs to go into a portrait-only submission, so Keep page size turns it while the page stays portrait.
Tips and limits
- You can rotate PDFs of up to 50 MB; a password-protected file asks for its password before the thumbnails load.
- Rotation only works in quarter turns. A page scanned at a slight angle cannot be straightened here.
- When no pages are removed, the file is rotated in place, so tags, attachments and form scripts stay as they were.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the rotation permanent or just a viewing setting?
- It is saved into the PDF itself. Anyone who opens the downloaded file in any reader sees the pages the way you set them.
- Can I rotate only some pages?
- Yes. Use the arrows under a single page, or select a group of pages first; the toolbar buttons then affect only the selection.
- Does rotating reduce the quality of my pages?
- No. Text, vector graphics and images are not re-rendered; the page is turned as it is. Only Keep page size scales the content to fit the original sheet.
- What happens to a page I remove?
- It is left out of the output entirely, together with the bookmarks, links and form fields that pointed to it, so nothing of its content remains in the file.
- Is my document kept after I rotate it?
- No. It is processed on vupdf’s own servers only to apply your changes and is deleted right after the rotated file is delivered to you.
